Introduction

The Louvre Museum, located in the Palais Royal Musée du Louvre, is a must-visit for anyone heading to Paris. This world-renowned art museum is home to some of the most iconic works of art, including the Venus de Milo, Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. With the largest collection of art globally, you will get lost in the mesmerizing exhibition spaces of the Louvre.

Visiting the Louvre

The museum is open from 9am-6pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, and from 9am-9:45pm on Friday. The museum is closed on Tuesdays. The last entry into the museum is one hour before closing, and the museum starts to clear the rooms and galleries out 30 minutes before closing1.

The cost of entry at the Louvre Museum is €15 per person for adults if purchased at the entrance. If you opt to buy the ticket online, it is €17. However, it’s advisable to book your ticket in advance due to the long queues at the entrance.

The Louvre Collection

The Louvre collection is divided among eight curatorial departments: Egyptian Antiquities, Near Eastern Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Paintings, Prints, and Drawings. This vast collection showcases a broad spectrum of art and history, reflecting the diverse cultures that have shaped our world.

Leonardo da Vinci at the Louvre

The Louvre Museum houses 25% of all Leonardo da Vinci’s paintings, including The Virgin, Saint Anne, and the Child Playing with a Lamb, La Belle Ferronière, and the unfinished Portrait of Isabella d’Este. The particularly notable Saint John the Baptist and the globally famous La Gioconda (the Mona Lisa) are also part of this collection.

Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People

One of the most potent symbols of the French Republic, Liberty Leading the People by Eugène Delacroix, is a masterpiece that showcases the French Revolution of 1830. The painting depicts a scene from the barricades, with the towers of Notre Dame in the background establishing that the clashes are taking place in Paris. This iconic work is located in Gallery 77 on the first floor in the Denon wing of the Louvre.

Venus de Milo

The Venus de Milo is one of the most famous female figures in the Louvre, alongside the Mona Lisa and The Winged Victory of Samothrace. Found on the Greek island of Melos in 1820, she now resides in Room 344, Sully Wing, Left 0 of the museum. Her lack of arms has led to much debate about her identity: is she the sea goddess Amphitrite or Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty?.
